Risky behaviors of bus drivers on the north-eastern transportation routes : a case study of one private transport company
Abstract:
Risk behaviors of drivers are key in creating traffic accidents. This study
was a qualitative research conducted among bus drivers of a private transport
company. It investigated risk behaviors of bus drivers and the relationship between
the Labor Process and risk behaviors of bus chauffeurs. In-depth interviews were
employed with 11 bus drivers in association with real time observations, for
analyses.
It was found that risk behaviors could be divided into 2 natures. 1. Risk
behaviors directly involved with driving, which were driving beyond the speed
limit, suddenly overtaking, negligent driving and overtaking, close driving, sudden
braking, violating traffic lights and signals, and driving on impaired bus. 2. Risk
behaviors indirectly involved with driving were inadequate rest, driving for more
than 4 hours, using energizers such as coffee or stimulant drinks, to lessen or to
handle fatigue, exhaustion and slumbering.
It is recommended that preventing traffic accidents caused by risk
behaviors of bus drivers requires collaboration from all parties. The government
sectors and offices for controlling and supervising drivers should be strict with the
rules, regulations and obligations. There should be encouragement and support to
establish a labor union to increase the bargaining power between the employees and
the employers and entrepreneurs. The private sector or the entrepreneurs should
adopt efficient administrative systems, audibility, responsibility in the assignments
imposed to employees, improve welfare including health and daily living costs of
employees, to reduce risk behaviors in otherwise never drivers and also reduce
destruction of life and property, which might have happened.
