A survey of nursing research related to pain in Thailand
Abstract:
This descriptive research was conducted with the objective of surveying the physical characteristics and details of the existing nursing research related to pain in Thailand. The studied documents were the nursing research related to pain in Thailand since the year 1979 (B.E. 2522), continuing up to the year 2001 (B.E. 2544), including the existing research in forms of theses and other works that were not performed as a part of a course and were published in nursing, medical or public health journals. The instrument used in the research was a details-recording form constructed by the researcher and was verified with validity. The obtained physical characteristics and details of nursing research related to pain were analyzed, using frequency distribution and percentage statistics. The results from the study were: 1. Physical characteristics of nursing research related to pain in Thailand. From the 191 research studies that were examined 51.3 percent were printed during the year 1997 and 2001 (B.E. 2540-2544), 63.9 percent of the studies were theses. Eighty-four point eight percent of the works came out of academic institutes. Fifty-two point nine percent of the research studied were published, mainly through nursing journals (28.8 percent), 74.3 percent did not mention any source of funding. Seventy-three point three percent were conducted with experimental research designs. Fifty-five point five percent of the studies identified their conceptual frameworks, 47.5 percent used other concepts and/or theories while 32.2 percent adopted gate control theory in the study. Eighty-eight point three percent of the population or sample groups were patients, 32.5 percent of whom were surgical patients. Eighty-one point two percent used non-probability sampling in order to pick out the sample groups. Forty-eight point seven percent adapted or adopted instruments already constructed by other researchers and 46.1 percent of these instruments were verified for validity and reliability. Eighty-five point nine percent of the obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. 2. Details of nursing research related to pain in Thailand. The details of the studied nursing research can be concluded as follows: 90.1 percent investigated the perception of pain in sample groups, 74.9 percent studied the locations of pain while 73.8 percent assessed its severity. Eighty-four point three percent studied about pain management of which 57.6 percent were studies about non-pharmacologic pain management. Thirty-eight point seven percent studied about pain management through thinking mechanisms and actions, with the largest number of these (17.3 percent) using provision of information and self-practice while 5.8 percent chose to study the use of massage as pain management with direct contact to the body. Fifty-nine point five percent investigated the pain management person groups and found that were nurses and most of the studies did not assess the effect of pain on the patients
