Abstract: The purpose of this research is to study the history and development of Music in Roman Catholic Mass of Thailand, together with the study of musical characteristic and relationship of the melody and lyric of the song. The research is based on the Historical Musicology Approach with the use of Ethnomusicology method in interviewing and gathering information. Musical development in Roman Catholic Mass of Thailand can be divided into 4 periods : Period I Music of the Roman Liturgy Year 1511 – 1851 Period II The beginning of musical development in Mass Year 1851 – 1946 Period III The reformation of Music and the Music 10 years after the Second Vatican Council Year 1946–1972 Period IV The Development of Thai Composition in Mass Year 1973 – 2004 Musical characteristics in Mass found are Strophic Form, Plagal Mode, Diatonic and pentatonic scale. The range is within an octave. The use of traditional harmony and relationship of the 5th . Phrasing is in a form of Period. Melodic and lyric relationship in Mass is in Syllabic and Neumatic Style. Thai Songs that developed from foreign songs have to adjust melody and rhythm when the number of text syllable is not equivalent to the original song. New compositions in Thai use a lot of Neumatic style. There was an arrangement of rhythmic pattern and contrasted melodic motion by setting each pattern in the same separation of verses in Thai poetry.

Abstract: งานวิจัยฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติและพัฒนาการของดนตรีในพิธีมิสซาของศาสนาคริสต์นิกายโรมันคาทอลิกในประเทศไทย ลักษณะโครงสร้างของบทเพลง และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทำนองกับคำร้องของบทเพลงในพิธีมิสซา การดำเนินงานวิจัยเป็นการศึกษาดนตรีวิทยาในเชิง ประวัติศาสตร์โดยใช้หลักวิธีทางมานุษยดนตรีวิทยาในการสัมภาษณ์ และเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ผลของการวิจัยมีดังนี้ พัฒนาการของดนตรีในพิธีมิสซาของศาสนาคริสต์นิกายโรมันคาทอลิกในประเทศไทยแบ่งได้ 4 สมัย คือ สมัยที่ 1 สมัยของดนตรีตามจารีตโรมัน ปี ค.ศ. 1511 – 1851 สมัยที่ 2 สมัยการเริ่มต้นการเปลี่ยนแปลงของดนตรีในพิธีมิสซา ปี ค.ศ. 1851 – 1946 สมัยที่ 3 สมัยการปฏิรูปดนตรีในพิธีมิสซา และ ดนตรีในช่วง 10 ปีหลังการสังคายนาวาติกันที่ 2 ปี ค.ศ. 1946 – 1972 สมัยที่ 4 สมัยพัฒนาการของเพลงไทยในพิธีมิสซา ปี ค.ศ. 1973 – 2004 ลักษณะของดนตรีในพิธีมิสซา ส่วนใหญ่ใช้รูปแบบการประพันธ์แบบ Strophic Form บันไดเสียงที่ใช้เป็นลักษณะของโมดรอง (Plagal Mode), Diatonic และ Pentatonic ช่วงเสียงของบทเพลงส่วนใหญ่มีความกว้าง 1 Octave สำหรับการใช้เสียงประสานเป็นแบบดั้งเดิมซึ่งเป็นการใช้ความสัมพันธ์คู่ 5 โดยที่ประโยคเพลงมีความสัมพันธ์แบบประโยคใหญ่ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทำนองกับคำร้องของบทเพลง ใช้ลักษณะความสัมพันธ์แบบ Syllabic และ Neumatic บทเพลงที่เปลี่ยนแปลงจากทำนองต่างชาติเป็นภาษาไทย มีการปรับทำนองและจังหวะ เมื่อมีจำนวนพยางค์เนื้อร้องภาษาไทยไม่เท่ากับพยางค์คำร้องในภาษาเดิม บทเพลงที่ประพันธ์เป็นภาษาไทยมีการจัดรูปแบบจังหวะ และทิศทางขึ้นลงของทำนอง ไปตามการแบ่งวรรคของคำร้องประเภทบทกลอนของไทย
