Interculatural communication : an investigation of international students' uncertainty and communication satisfaction on American campuses
Abstract:
This study investigates uncertainty and communication satisfaction of international students on American campuses. The investigation focuses on the relationships of international students uncertainty and communication to their level of communication antecedents: communication apprehension, assertiveness, and interaction involvement. Effects of level of education, field of the study, ethnicity, gender, and years living in the U.S. on the relationships are also discussed.
One hundred participants were selected by convenient sampling method. Descriptive statistics, T-Test, and ANOVA were employed to analyze the data. Results indicated that significant relationships exist among the variables. Further tests were conducted to investigate which of the communication antecedents best predict the communication outcome of the international students on American campuses.
Results revealed that the concept of communication apprehension was not applicable to the international students on American campuses. English rather than fear of speaking seemed to be the barrier of their verbal skill. Interaction involvements level of international students seemed to be the best predictor of their level of certainty and communication satisfaction.
