Reading plus as a tool to improve thai students reading skill : a case of mattayomsuksa one students at Det Udom school, Ubon Ratchathani Province
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine whether the Reading Plus treatment led to more effective acquisition of selected vocabulary items than the Reading Only treatment. The subjects of the study were 20 Mattayomsuksa One students who took the fundamental English course, English 7, during the first semester of the academic year 2002 at Det Udom School. The instruments used in the study were pre- and post-tests for vocabulary, Reading Plus treatment exercises, and Reading Only treatment supplementary texts. The data were statistically analyzed. The results of the study revealed that the Reading Plus treatment was not a better tool for the students to acquire knowledge of target words than the Reading Only treatment. Both the Reading Plus and the Reading Only treatment were equally effective in helping the students to gain new vocabulary.
