Abstract: The purpose of the study was to compare the results of vocabulary acquisition of students' participation in two different learning techniques; the translation technique and the video using technique. Subjects of the study were 40 Mattayomsuksa 4 students at Khemmaratpittyakom School, Ubon Ratchathani whose English proficiency was weak. They studied Fundamental English 12 course as their core course during the second semester of the 2001 academic year. They were divided into two groups; a control group and an experimental group. Twenty subjects in the former group studied English vocabulary by translating English words from English to Thai, whereas other twenty subjects in the latter group had the same lessons by using instructional videos in the language lab. Both groups had the same pre-test and post-test. The instruments used in the study included a pre-test, a post-test, a set of instruction video and video scripts. The results of the study revealed that the control group had higher scores than the experimental group. However, both techniques helped students increase their vocabulary acquisition. Practical applications and ideas for further research are suggested.

Abstract: การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมาย เพื่อเปรียบเทียบผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษระหว่างการสอนโดยการแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย กับการสอนโดยเดาความหมายจากปริบทและบทบาทจากวิดีโอ กลุ่มประชากร คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 4 โรงเรียนเขมราฐพิทยาคม จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ที่เรียนรายวิชาภาษาอังกฤษหลัก 12 รหัสวิชา อ 018 ปีการศึกษา 2545 จำนวน 40 คน ซึ่งประชากรทั้งหมดมีผลการเรียนรายวิชาภาษาอังกฤษในภาคเรียนที่ 1 อยู่ในระดับต่ำ ประชากรแบ่งออกเป็นสองกลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 20 คน แต่ละกลุ่มใช้วิธีสอน ดังนี้ กลุ่มควบคุมใช้วิธีสอนโดยการแปลความหมายของบทวิดีโอจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ส่วนกลุ่มทดลองใช้การสอนโดยให้นักเรียนเดาความหมายของคำศัพท์จากปริบท และบทบาทในวิดีโอ นักเรียนทำแบบทดสอบก่อนเรียนก่อนทำการทดลอง และนักเรียนทำแบบทดสอบหลังเรียนภายหลังเสร็จสิ้นการเรียนแต่ละครั้ง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการศึกษาประกอบด้วยแบบทดสอบก่อนและหลังเรียน บทวิดีโอ และวิดีโอประกอบการสอนภาษาอังกฤษของกระทรวงศึกษาธิการผลการศึกษาสามารถสรุปได้ว่า วิธีการสอนโดยการแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ช่วยให้นักเรียนมีผลสัมฤทธิ์ด้านการเรียนคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษสูงกว่าการสอนโดยเดาความหมายจากวิดีโอ อย่างไรก็ตามคะแนนจากแบบทดสอบหลังเรียนชี้ให้เห็นว่า ทั้งสองวิธีการสอนสามารถพัฒนาผลสัมฤทธิ์การเรียนคำศัพท์ได้ จากผลการศึกษา ผู้วิจัยได้เสนอแนะวิธีการสอนที่เป็นประโยชน์ตลอดจนแนวทางการศึกษาที่เกี่ยวข้องไว้ด้วย.
