Helping new graduates to improve writing skill : A case study with internal auditors
Abstract:
One of major complaints from employers about college graduates was their poor writing skill. (De Gallow, 2006). As an Internal Audit manager, I also faced the same problem when reviewing the audit reports drafted by new graduates who had just joined the company as internal auditors. As their trainer, I searched for teaching methods to support the traditional way to improve their writing skills to make them more effective. My independent study focused on six new graduate internal auditors. The classroom topic was "Business Writing" which was an essential skill for internal audit report writing and limited to a sub-topic of avoiding word redundancy in writing. The study was conduced by a teacher in the classroom using both lectures and a case study. Students took the pre-and post-test for the lecture and participated in a case study class then came up with the solution to the case study as a grou. Analysis was carried out in the following aspects: (1) differences between pre-test and post test, (2) learner attitude toward classroom that applied Problem-Based teaching technique using a case study as a main teaching tool, (3) case study scores evaluating how learners' answer the case study showed that (3a) their comprehension of teaching material and concept and (3b) their problem solving and analytical skills had improved. This was confirmed by teacher observation notes on the quality of their collaborative work. Ther results showed that when applying Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in my lecture classroom, (1) learner post-test scores improved, (2) learner attitude toward PBL method was positive, and (3) a deeper material and concept comprehension. The study result may be helpful for teachers, in-house trainers, and others achieve their student learning goals.
