Abstract:
This historical research was emphasized on the architectural styles in the reign of King Rama V, appearing in the Provinces of eastern region of Thailand, together with, the styles of contemporary constructions, witnessed in Prachin and Chantaburi provinces during 1894-1910. The approaches for this study were field exploration, historical document, and other related papers including photographs and interview. The outcome of this research showed that the architectural style in the reign of King Rama V was greatly popular in the central region and adjacent provinces. Initially, the constructions were designed to front the main waterways such as Bangpakong and Chantaburi revers, but later,after the urban planning had played and important role in area managing in both province, the buildings were instead to the main roads. Moreover, residential area and governmental organization area were systematically separated. The architectural styles of public and officials' residents in the studied regions were mostly influenced by wastern architecture and partially copied from the capital. The land shape was mostly rectangular and the interior spacing was partitioned into rooms while most of the pelple's houses and religion sites were constantly preserved traditional Thai and local architectural styles. Even the influence of western style had affected second element, the main element of the construction were built following the local architectural style;in contrast, the influence of western architectural style also furthered the local style to be more outstanding. Heretofore, the local architectural style in Prachin and Chantaburi provinces were partially mixed by the foreign architecture; therefore, the new coming ripple of western style architecture interestingly enlightened the mulit - image of the architectural style in the reign of King Rama V with its similarity and difference.
