Abstract:
The purposes of this quasi-experimental study were to examine the effects of the application of self-efficacy in caregiving behavior promotion for caregivers of elderly with knee osteoarthritis. The subjects were caregivers of elderly with knee osteoarthritis treated at orthopedic clinic in outpatient department of Phrapokoklao Hospital, Chantaburi from january through december 2000. Twenty caregivers of elderly with knee osteoarthritis were equally assigned into control and experimental groups. The intervention sessions focused on provided opportunities to try follow tutorial instructions, vicarious experience mediated through modeled in booklet of caring elderly with knee osteoarthritis and demonstration, verbal persuasion, activating a particular emotion or the others problem, recalled along with past of different events such love stories or impression stories between caregiverss and elderly, giving the chance to debated suggestion and explaination of reson. Data collection consisted of the percived self-efficacy assessment, outcome expectations assesment and caregiving behaviors assesment questionaires. Content validity was examined by specialist and reliability, using Cronbach alpha coefficient at .83, .70, .87 respectively. The discrimination power testing of outcome expectations assesment, using t-test. Data were analysed in items of frequency and percentage. The hypotheses were tested by Wilcoxon signed-ranks test and Mann-Whitney U test.The results of the study revealed that caregivers of elderly with knee osteoarthritis in the experimental group had the perceived delf efficacy score, outcome expectations score, and caregiving behaviors score significantly higher than before receiving promotion (p<.01). Comparison between groups revealed that caregivers of elderly with knee osteoarthritis in the experimental group had caregiving behaviors score significantly higher than control group. (p<.05). The score of perceived self-efficacy, and outcome expectations score were significantly higher than the control group (p<.001).
