The sport commitment model : validating structural relationships with thai high school and intercollegiate athlete populations

Abstract: (a) The original conceptual model of Sport Commitment(Carpenter & Coleman, 1998), the constructs of the sport commitment model(SCM) related to the grobal construct of sport commitment; and (b) the mediational model(Weiss,Kimmel,&smith,2001), with its sport enjoyment that mediated the relationships between dimensions contained in the SCM and the grobal construct of sport commitment, have been applied and tested intensively in the western countries. However, such eviedence is a limited value in the explaning the involvement Thai population has in sport. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: (a) to test and validate an instrument of SCM in a thai athletes population( Thai Athlete Opinion Survey: TAOS) ; and (b) to examine the structral relationships among componets of SCm in alignment with two conceptual models across two athletes' level samples. The TAOS was administered to total of 3548 (Validaion samples = 1186 ; calibration samples = 2362) high school and intercollegiate athletes. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed the the model fits the empirical data well. All sub-scales were found to have adequate reliability, as indecated by the alpha reliability coefficients and composite reliability of the instrument of SCM for the thai athletes. Moreover, hypothesized relationships among the variables were tested using structural support equation modeling. The results provided a support for both original and mediational models. However, an alternative model was also tested in order to identify its direct and indirect influences between high school and intercollegiate athletes. Regarding the test for the SCM structure between the groups without cross-group constraint and those with constraint, it reveale that there were the findings were found to be a useful application for maximizing the commitment and motivation for Thai athletes.
