A study of the English learning outcome of Matayom suksa 1 students by using the extensive reading activities and the conventional method in Surin educational service area office 1
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study the English learning outcome by using the Extensive Reading Activities and the Conventional Method. The objectives were (1) to investigate the English learning outcomes of Matayomsuksa 1 students the Extensive Reading Activities and the Conventional method ; (2) to compare the English learning outcomes of Matayomsuksa 1 students before and after class by using the Extensive Reading Activities and the Conventional Method ; and (3) to compare the English learning outcomes of Matayomsuksa 1 students between the using the Extensive Reading Activities and the Conventional method.
The sample in this study were eighty-two students of the seven grade of Chomphraprachasan School in the second semester of the academic year 2007. Chomphraprachasan School was selected from Surin Educational Service Area Office 1 by using purposive random sampling. These students were studying Basic English (E31101) and assigned the method of teaching to both classes at random. The experimental group, the students being taught by the Extensive Reading Activities ; and the control group, the students being taught by the Conventional Method. The study was consisted of (1) the Extensive Reading Activities lesson plans for the experimental group and the Conventional Method lesson plans for the control group, (2) the proficiency test of English in reading, writing skills, and (3) the questionnaires on love reading habit of using the method. The data was statistically analyzed by using percentage , means , standard deviation, t-test for the dependent group , and t-test for the independent group. The results of the research, t-test for the dependent group, and t-test for the independent group. The results of the research showed that :
1. Before class, the students being taught by the Extensive Reading Activities could acquire English in reading and writing skills at low level, and their acquisition in love reading habit was at low level. The students being taught by the conventional method could acquire English in reading and writing skills at low level, and their acquisition in love reading habit was at low level. After class, the students being taught by the extensive reading activities could acquire English in reading and writing skills at high level, and their acquisition in love reading habit was at the highest level. The students being taught by the conventional method could acquire English in reading and writing skills at medium level, and their acquisition in love reading habit was at high level.
2. By internal group comparison, the students being taught by the extensive reading activities could acquire English in reading and writing skills after class higher than before class at the .01 level of statistical significance. Their acquisition in love reading habit of using the method after class was higher than before class at the .01 level of statistical significance. The students being taught by the conventional method could acquire English in reading and writing skills after class were higher than before class at the .01 level of statistical significance. Their acquisition in love reading habit of using the method after class was higher than before class at the .01 level of statistical significance as well.
3. In comparison study between groups, the students being taught by Extensive Reading Activities could acquire English in reading and writing skills after class higher than the students being taught by the Conventional Method at the .01 level of statistical significance. And their acquisition in love reading habit after class was higher than the students being taught by the Conventional Method at the .01 level of statistical significance as well.
