A development of an instructional model of English by using research based learning method for mathayomsuksa (the tenth grade) student in Surin educational service office area 1
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to develop the qualified model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method which is a kind of research and development consisting of five steps in its process which are follows :
Step one, a basic data investigation, concerns with the study of the 2001 Basic Education Curriculum, Foreign Curriculum, theories of the development of the model of English instruction and the research on the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method. The research method use in this step is the documentary study and its summation in the summary form. It is found. It is found that:
1. The 2001 Basic Education Curriculum has a focus on the equal right of education for all Thai people. The learner centred teaching methods are at its priority. Individuals can develop themselves endlessly and consistently through their lives. All kinds of learning management must promise happiness in life, wisdom, being good, and the complete life for Thai people. While the Foreign Languages as a tool to communicate with other people according to their will in different situations both in everyday life and career.
2. The study of the theories of the development of the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based-learning method shows that learning will occur when the efficient leaning process is created and the learner has share to create learning factors by himself according his aptitude and interest through the help of instruments and various learning resources. The learner will have a chance to exercise his potentiality. He will learn from direct experience.
Step two, a model construction and development, concerns with the model construction of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method in accordance with the basic data found in step one. It can be divided into four parts: the rationale of the method construction, its objectives, its stages of learning management, and guidelines for its application. The stages of learning management can be subdivided into five parts: the preliminary, the planning of learning management, the understandings cultivation, the activities orientation, and the summary and evaluation. In this research, the contents of learning management contain twelve items; 1. problem analysis and hypothesis. 2. data collection and tools invention, 3. data analysis summary, and presentation, 4. problem analysis, 5. document analysis, 6. activity planning,7. tool invention, 8. trail on tool and data collection. 9. data analysis, 10. summary on data analysis, 11. data presentation and, 12.summary and evaluation.
Step three is a model evaluation by experts and its improvement. At this step, the appropriateness of the model will be evaluation form of the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based-learning method. The form is five rating scales questionnaire , The data are analyzed by using means and standard deviation. It is found that the instructional model is suitable at the high level in its structure and activities.
Step four is the trails of the instructional model. The purpose of this step is to compare the result the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method with the result of the normal English teaching method. This is to find out the problems and obstacles that may occur in the model of English instruction by encouraging students to us the research based learning method. A72 student sample was selected specifically from the tenth grade students of Sumrongthapwittayakom school by means of Simple Random Sampling. These students were studying Basic English (E 41101) in the first semester of the academic year 2007. They were divided , by casting the lots, into two groups: the group under the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method, and the group under the normal English teaching method. The trials were done from August 21, 2007 to October 4, 2007. The tools were lesson plans for both the focus group and the controlled group, the proficiency test of English in four skills, the evaluation form of group working behavior, the evaluation form of research skills, and the questionnaire on the satisfaction of using the model. The data were analyzed by using percentage, means, standard deviation, t-test for the dependent group and t test for the independent group. The findings are as follows:
1. After class, the group under the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based leaning method could acquire English in all four skills at medium level, their group working behavior was at high level, their satisfaction of using the model was at high level, and their research kills was at medium level. The group under the normal English teaching method could acquire English in all four skills at medium level, their group working behavior was at high level, and their satisfaction of using the model was at high level as well.
2. By comparison, the group under the model of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method could acquire English proficiency after class better than before class. They were higher than the group under the normal English teaching method at the 0.05 level of statistical significance.
Step five is the process of the model improvement. This step concerns the improvement of the activities orientation, by increasing the time in doing activity in the fourth step such as document analysis, trails on tool and data collections and summary on data analysis. There were 6 sub-activities of trails on tool and data collection by increasing the time only in How to preserve Food from one hour to two hours. The time in the model improvement increased from 18 hours to 21 hours.
The result of this research revealed that the model construction of English instruction by encouraging students to use the research based learning method is the quality model according to its objective.
