Abstract:
This content-based qualitative research aims to analyze meaning construction of queer sexual identity from a movie through the selection of signs and narrative elements and to survey factors influencing queer characters. A set of theories employed in this case study of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) includes semiology, narratology, queer theory and concepts of sexual identity. As a result, it can be noted as follows: In this movie, queer identity was created to represent four different sets of interpretations, such as a sexual discrimination in society, a sexually confused and self conflicting personality, emergence of man, human physiology, sex classification and the sexual identity of an individual originated from inner desire. All these interpretations were formulated from three signs, namely icon, index, and symbol through the film meaning structure which consists of trope, binary relation, synecdoche, metonymy, diachronic, and synchronic methods. These meanings are created from seven narrative elements: plot, theme, conflict, character, setting, symbol, and point of view. Factors affecting the sexual identity of queers were presented by two different perspectives. The first illustrated that factors were composed of sexual orientation, social control, collective identity, gender role, socialization process, and sexual characteristics while the latter featured that there was only one factor which was the mental desire.
