Behavior of Beam to column semi-rigid connection with welded connection
Abstract:
The beam to column semi-rigid steel connection of the structural steel framing system is most frequently used in current practice. An experiment was set up in order to investigate the real behavior of beam-to-column in terms of semi-rigid connection. Three types of welded connection, double web angle connection, top and seat connection, top and seat with double web connection, were selected to investigate their behavior. An aspect of the characteristic of welding is the affect to the connection strength, therefore, the experimental study was categorized into partially welded connection and fully weled connection. The studied models were used to represent half of the frames as cantilever beam to column. The theoretical models, polynomial model presented by Frye-Morris and three parameter models presented by Kishi and Chen, were adopted to compare the experimental results. The theoretical results, which were computed from the material properties and connection features, demonstrated the expected relationship. The experimental results of partially welded connection correlate closely with theoretical results. The higher ultimate moment capacity in fully welded connection compared to partially welded connection, shows approximately 20%-48% increase.
