Abstract:
Composite steel channel beam is basically a concrete beam in which the reinforcement at the soffit of beam consists of a structural steel channel and the vertical reinforcement is used as a shear connector. It has advantages such as composite beams need to be a minimum construction depth in multi-storey buildings. The general behavior of the beam is investigated in this study. Tests are conducted on fifteen beams divided into three series for flexural failure, shear failure and arching-shear failre. Tha main variable of the beams is span length and spacing of stirrups.The experimental results showed that the behavior of the beams was similar to that of normal reinforced concrete beam in all cases. It was found that the ACI Code could be applied to predict both flexural strength and shear strength of the beams. Deflection of the beams at service load was acceptable in comparison with allowable value defined by ACI provision. Moreover, the method of calculation of instantaneous deflection as developed for traditional reinforced concrete could be applied practically for flexural beams. For comparative cost, the composite section still has an advantage of neither false-work nor wooden forms required.
