Study on the coccinellid, coccinella transversalis f. (coleoptera : coccinellidae), and its role as biological control agent
Abstract:
The coccinellid, Coccinella transversalis F., was one of the important natural enemy of aphids. The female produce on an average 645.2667+- 213.3711 eggs, and the incubation period was 2.550 +- 0.50 days. The mean duration of four instars were 1.90 +- 0.3051, 1.3333 +- 0.3457, 2.1667 +- 0.3796 and 2.8667 +- 0.5713 days respectively. The growth increment, using the width of head capsule, assumed a geometric progression with a ratio being 1.2769. The duration of pupal stage was 3.1667 +- 0.3790 days. The longevity of adult male and female were 37.40 +- 16.9529 and 45.5333 +- 18.1457 days respectively, when fed with Aphis craccivora Koch under laboratory condition (28 +- 2 deg C and 75 +- 3% RH). A. craccivora was more suitable in the mass-reaing of C. transversalis than Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The population parameters obtained from the life table analysis were: the net reproductive rate of increase (Ro) = 447.6444, the cohort generation time (Tc) = 35.5013 days, the capacity for increase (rc) = 0.1719 and the finite rate of increase (lambda) = 1.1876. The predation capacity of four larval and adult stage were 10.25 +- 2.6730, 13.40 +- 3.6907, 31.40 +- 5.0617, 64.95 +- 8.0817 ad 1,251.95 +- 238.6941 aphids per individual respectively. The average numbers of aphid consumed by the larval stage and larval-adult stage were 119.50 +- 11.2741 and 1,371.45 +- 238.2916 respectively.
