Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate alcohol consumption, prevalence rate, and the relationship among age, family history of drinking, drinking refusal self-efficacy, negative and positive alcohol expectancies related to alcohol consumption in the male adult population, Bangkok Metropolis. They study sample included 120 males adults age 20 to 59 years old selected by Multi-stage sampling. The instruments were sets of questionnaires included demographic data questionnaire, drinking refusal self-efficacy questionnaire, the drinking expectancies questionnaire (measurement of negative and positive alcohol expectancies), and alcohol drinking habit questionnaire. The questionnaires were tested for content validity by a panel of five experts. The Cronbachs Alpha Coefficient of the instruments were 0,91, 0.85, and 0.79, respectively, Statistics techniques used in data analysis were percent, mean, standard deviation, and Pearsons product moment correlation. The results were as following: 1. The study found that males adults age 20 to 30 years old drank alcohol 47.67%, mean age of drinking alcohol was 33.98 years (SD=10.91). As regards the kind of alcohol, the most favorite drink was beer (40.7%). As for the frequency, 28.33% a sometimes, and 40.70% drank alcohol more than 1 botte/time. In terms of the age of first drinking, 16.28% drank alcohol for the first time when they were 18 years old ([x-bar]=17.77, SD = 3.38). The reasons of their first drinking were desired to experience with alcohol 41.8%, encouragement by friends 33.62%. Males adults drank alcohol with friends (72.20%), and drinking occasion was 38.37% drank during social events, festival, and traveling with friends. 2. Prevalence rate of alcohol consumption in the male adult population, Bangkok Metropolis, was 71.67 percent. 3. Age, drinking refusal self-efficacy, and negative alcohol expectancies were negatively related to alcohol consumption in male adult in male adult population, Bangkok Metropolis at the .05 level (r = - 0.18, -0.54, -0,35, respectively) 4. Family history of drinking, and positive alcohol expectancies were positively related to alcohol consumption in male adult population, Bangkok Metropolis at the .05 level (r=0.19, 0.37, respectively.).
