Abstract:
This quasi-experimental research aim to test the effect of pain management with listening music on pain of post-emergency abdominal surgery patient. Study sample were 40 post emergency abdominal surgery outpatients who were treated at the Surgery Department of Surathanee Hospital. The subjects were divided into control groups and experimental groups. The groups were matched in terms of sex, age, diagnosis and type of operation. The control group received routine nursing care, while the experimental group received the pain management with listening music in addition to routine nursing care. The program was based on the Symptom Management Model (Dodd et al.,2001) and Listening Music as part of Complementary Concepts comprising of four sessions: a) symptom experience assessment, b) knowledge providing, c) pain management by medicine and music listening, d) pain management evaluation phase. The pain numeric scale was used to measure the collected data. Furthermore, Independent t-test was used to analyze comparison of data between the two groups.
The major findings showed that:
1. The post test mean score on pain of the experimental group was significantly lower
than that of the pretest ( X̅[subscript pretest] = 6.10; X̅[subscript post test]= 3.35; t-test = .27.69; p<.05).
2. The post test mean score of pain in experimental group was significantly lower than
that of the control group (X̅[subscript control] = 4.60; X̅[subscript experiment] = 3.35 ; t-test = 3.88; p<.05).
