Effects of crude water extract from Cymbopogon citratus Stapf. on renal functions in anesthetized dogs
Abstract:
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is known to be a folk medicinal plant. The objective of this study was to elucidate its diuretic and renal function effects in anesthetized dogs. Dogs were given distilled water (group 1) or crude water extract of C. Citratus (decoction) 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 gm/kg in group 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively via oro-gastric tube. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and hematocrit (Hct) were not altered in all groups except group 5. Group 5 dogs showed the significant decrease in heart rate during 1.5 to 2.5 hours after feeding, while hematocrit elevated throughout the experimental period. Urine flow rate (V) was reduced significantly in group 5 and tended to be high in group 4. In group 5, renal plasma flow (RPF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were decreased, whereas the filtration fraction (FF) was slightly increased. The urinary excretion rate of sodium (UNa V), potassium (UK V) and chloride (UCl V) were significantly decreased. Plasma potassium (PK) was higher in experimental period than control period. the negative free water clearance was demonstrated throughout the experiment. The results of this experiment may indicate that C. citratus exhibits antidiuretic and antinatriuretic in higher dose even though slightly diuresis has been demonstrated in 5 gm/kg dogs. However, the diuresis of this medicinal plant which mentioned is probably due to more water drinking
