Abstract:
This research aims at studying the evolution of Krung Rattanakosin, the origin of Bangkok, for the clear understanding of its development over time in terms of settlement patterns resulted from the interrelationship among may signficant factors; i.e., system of administration, economy, social organization, culture, and technology. The study outcome, then, focuses on the changes and trends of land utilization in order to formulate the land use concept for balancing heritage conservation and urban development. The findings indicate that this area was known as Canen Ban Cock since [Ayutthaya] period. Up until King Rama I had established its as the capital, it then became the administrative centre where many palaces were built for royal residences and government offices. The signficant change was marked in the reign of King Rama V. By reforming the administrative power, education and other infrastructure, the mixed use of palaces were consequently changed into the government office. The urban culture had altered from water- oriented to land-oriented as seen in the form of 2 storey shophouses along the streets. Its density went up higher in the reign of King Rama VII when distributor roads were constructed to link the main arterials. Moreover the construction method in the time of King Rama IX had made the area very compact. The decline in intensity of land uses for government and residential is obviously observed while commercial activity is tending to progress. The recommendation of land use concept is the continuation of the mixed land use for revitalising this old city as our national pride as well as the productive and habitable place within its caring capacity.
