Abstract:
The purposes of this descriptive research were to study: 1) suicidal ideation of persons with HIV/AIDS, 2) the relationships between selected factors including sex, age, education, marital status, economic status, period blood examination known, sexual orientation, substance abuse, mental illness, stage of disease, social support, stigma, family relationships, coping responses, history of family suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation of persons with HIV/AIDS. The sample was 230 HIV/AIDS patients selected by every second patient and accidental sampling method from special HIV/AIDS hospital. The research instruments were questionnaires namely social support, stigma, family relationships, coping responses and suicidal ideation. All questionnaires were tested for content validity and reliability. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient reliability were .88, .95, .95, .91, .83 and .85, respectively. Statistic technique utilized in data analysis were Frequency, Percentage, Standard deviation, Mean, Median, Mode, Unpaired t-test One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Eta and Pearson's product moment correlation. Major results of this study were as follows: 1. HIV/AIDS patients were mostly male (63.5%) with mean age of 35.36 years old. The mean of blood examination known was 55.77 months. They had score on social support in the moderate level ([Mean] = 2.13), stigma in the high level ([Mean] = 2.72), family relationships in the good level ([Mean] = 3.86). In addition the mean scores of problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping were 51.46 and 64.89, respectively. The mean score on suicidal ideation was 7.11 (S.D. = 6.14). HIV/AIDS patients had suicidal ideation in low level, moderate level, and high level at 57.5%, 23.9% and 8.6%, respectively. 2. Age, education, marital status, blood examination known, substance abuse and mental illness were not significant related to suicidal ideation in person with HIV/AIDS. 3. Sex and family suicidal behavior were significant related to suicidal ideation (p = .05, t = -2.19 and -2.58, Eta[superscript 2] = .14 and .17). Economic, sexual orientation and stage of disease were significant related to suicidal ideation too. (p = .05, F = 4.95, 8.26 and 4.59, Eta[superscript 2] = .25, .26 and .20 respectively). In addition, social support, family relationships, and problem-focused coping were negaive significantly related to suicidal (p = .05, r = -.18, -.30 and -.16, respectively). Stigma, emotion-focused coping were positive significantly related to suicidal ideation in person with HIV/AIDS (p = .05, r = .27 and .21, respectively)
