Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to study nursing team effectiveness, to study the correlation between total quality managerial competencies of head nurses, team's personality and nursing team effectiveness, and to select the variables that predict nursing team effectiveness. The sample consisted of 241 nursing teams (1,205 staff nurses) selected by multi-stage random sampling. Research instruments were questionnaires including total quality managerial competencies of head nurses, team's personality in the aspects of extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience and nursing team effectiveness. The Cronbach's Alpha Coefficients for these instruments were .98, 70, .79, .73, .77, .60 and .95, respectively. The data were analyzed by Pearson's product moment correlation coeffcients and multiple regression. The major findings were as followos: 1. Mean score of team effectiveness of staff nurses in general hospitals was at a high level ([Mean] = 3.90). 2. Total quality managerial competencies of head nurses, teams personality in the aspects of extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience and emotional stability were positively correlated with nursing team effectiveness (r = .45, .32, .28, .27, .19 and .13, respectively) (p < .05). 3. Total quality managerial competencies of head nurses, team's personality in the aspects of agreeableness, extroversion and conscientiousness accounted for 32.4 percent of the variance in team effectiveness (R[superscript 2] = .324, p < .05). The predictive equation derived from the analysis as follows: Z =.388Z total quality managerial competencies of head nurses + .111Z agreeableness personality + .208Z extraversion personality + .184Z conscientiousness personality.
