Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to examine mental health and associated factors in caregivers of stroke patients at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The study was cross-sectional and descriptive study. The sample was 110 caregivers of stroke patients at Neurology clinic. Medical Outpatient Department of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The instruments were general demographic data of caregivers and stroke patients, Barthel ADL Index. Mental Health Inventory by Veit and Ware 1983 (MHI). All data were analyzed by SPSS for windows. Statistics utilized consists of mean, percentage, standard deviation, maximum, minimum, t-test, One-way ANOVA, LSD method, Multiple Linear Regression Anslysis. The major findings were as following: Mental health in caregivers of stroke patients were psychological well being 50.9% and psychological distress 49.1%. T-test and One way ANOVA indicated that factors significantly associated with mental health were education, income before and after illness, total family income, hour of care, secondary caregivers, relationship, social support (p<0.01) age, occupational, duration of illness, burden (p<0.05). From Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, it was found that age, education, secondary caregivers, social support and duration of illness could explain the mental health of the subjects with a predictive value of 31.5 percent (R[subscript 2] = 0.315)
