Abstract:
The aims of this dissertation are to transliterate, to translate and to study the Sāsasanavaṃsadīpa, which is one of the latest Pāli chronicles of Sri Lanka. This scrpture recognized as great literary work in the recent history of Pāli literature.
The text explains the history of the Buddhist dispensation from the time of the Buddha up to the establishment of Amarapura Nikāya in Sri Lanka. Further, it explains about all the important incidences that took place in the Buddhist dispensation in India and in Sri Lanka that reflect the various phases of both progression and declining of the Buddhist dispensation in each country. Meanwhile, the text also explains the contributions done by several kings for the promotion of Buddhism. It also records the several conflicts in Buddhist dispensation in Sri Lanka. Although this was composed as a Pāli chronicle, indeed, it is a poetic composition of admirable literary values.
In the process of study, the Romanized edition of Sāsanavaṃsadīpa was first of all produced, since the text has never been Romanized earlier. The second step is the translation of the whole text into English. This is the first English translation of the text. The third section of this study is to produce an introduction and a critical analysis of the content of the text. With this Romanized edition and English translation, the Sāsanavaṃsadīpa will widely be accessible to scholars and students of Pāli and Buddhist Studies for their further studies.
It is explicit that the author of the text follows the traditional way of writing which is common to Sri Lanka chronicle. The text begins with confirmation of the twenty-four previous Buddhas. Further, it explains about Gotama Buddha and his life. Then, it illustrates the three Buddhist Councils and the Buddhist missionaries which were supported by King Asoka.
It should be emphasized here that the eleventh chapter is very important regarding the Pāli literature of Sri Lanka. It records the important information about the Pāli scholars from the time of Ven. Buddhaghosa until the reign of King Paṇḍita Parakkamabāhu, the king at the time of Dambadeniya the third capital of Island.
Further, the text explains the establishment of the Amarapura Nikāya in Sri Lanka that was brought from Burma. It is obvious that the author pays a less attention to Siam Nikāya even though it was established several decades before the Amarapura Nikāya.
Nevertheless, the text is unparalleled in the vast field of Pāli literature that reflects Ven. Velitota Vimalasāras good command of Pāli Language and grammar. This study has taken all the important facts regarding the Sāsanavaṃsadīpa into consideration in its analysis.
