Abstract: Humanistic Buddhism has become the most popular Mahayana Buddhist movement in contemporary Taiwan. The contributions made to social welfare, education and charity projects by different Buddhist organizations connected to the movement have brought it worldwide attention. The growth and popularity of Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan has been attributed to the influence of the disciples of Master Tai Xu’s reformist faction, originally in Mainland China, who are referred to in this paper as “Mainstream Faction of Humanistic Buddhism”. Moreover, the concept of “Non-mainstream Faction of Humanistic Buddhism” is addressed in this dissertation. It refers to the other leaders of various Buddhist organizations who have not claimed themselves as Humanistic Buddhists but have been devoted to the work of charity, providing medical care, education, and culture to postwar Taiwanese society. Because of their long term efforts and contributions, it is suggested that their work should be acknowledged by the public and Academia as the Non-mainstream Faction part of Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan. Through the study of these two main factions of Humanistic Buddhism, an overall understanding of the different modes of Humanistic Buddhism in Taiwan can be realized. It is also important to note that the development and growth of Humanistic Buddhism has not been without controversy, and disagreements over the theory and practice of Humanistic Buddhism have surfaced over the years. Therefore, an intention of this dissertation is also to identify and discuss these controversies, as well as to examine the theory and practice of Humanistic Buddhism in contemporary Taiwan. Then, a reflection is made on Modernization, Rationalization, Secularization and Globalization of Buddhism based on the case study of Humanistic Buddhism in contemporary Taiwan. Finally, in the process of Modernization, the suggestion is for the Buddhists to follow the Buddha’s teachings, especially the Middle Way, and the three main Humanistic beliefs in Pali Tipitaka, which are: respect for Human dignity, enhance social and gender equality, and live an ethical life. In this way, the purpose of Humanistic Buddhism for creating Pure Land on Earth will be achieved.
