A Study of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva in Vietnamese Buddhist Literature and Its Influence on Vietnamese Society

Abstract: Avalokiteśvara is a popular Bodhisattva not only in Mahayana countries but also in Theravada ones. He has had a great influence on Buddhist culture, beliefs and practices in Mahayana Buddhist countries. When Buddhism spread to Vietnam and developed in its history, the Bodhisattva doctrine dominated and Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva who is a well known representative has been widely venerated and worshipped by the Vietnamese. He has become the Bodhisattva of Salvation whom they call for help in need. In Vietnam, it is possible to find the image of the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva in many cultural aspects including sculpture, painting, belief, and especially literary one. He has been described in Mahayana sutras, tales, and many poems. Prominent among them are the two literary works ‘the Bodhisattva on the Fragrant Mountain’ and ‘Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Reincarnated as Thị Kính’. Through his manifestations, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has practiced the Bodhisattva path to save sentient beings from sufferings. Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has largely influenced Vietnamese society. By his good virtues of loving kindness and compassion for salvation, of wonderful patience, of great filial piety, and so on, he has naturally become an object for veneration and for practice. In addition, Buddhist devotees hold the annual festivals to commemorate his virtues and to express their gratitude to him as well as wish to be granted miracles which are possible to be understood as a result of several conditions in which the law of cause and effect is determined.
