Abstract:
The swiftlets nest is believed to have high medical values in worldwide, especially in Asian countries. The market
cost might exceed thousands of million baths. Nakhon-si-thammarat is one of the important places in southern Thailand that
produce and export the nest. New drying technologies are critical needed by local industries for value-added of the dry nest
and reduction of transportation cost. Traditionally, warm air circulation is used to dry the nest, taking too long drying time
more than 22 hours, which is not practical for industrial production. In this paper, drying of the nest by microwave energy at
low pressure is developed. The drying system is composed of adjustable microwave power source, vacuum system, oil trap
and water condenser. The experimental results have shown that drying time has been drastically reduced to be only about
two hour, whereas temperature of the nest is lower than 30 degree Celsius. Details of the system and characteristics of
dried nest will be presented.
