Can earthworms produce fertilizer from cow manure?

Abstract: Earthworms (Phylum Annelida: Class Clitellata (Oligochaeta is now invalid) have been documented, since Darwin’s observation in 1981, as organisms involved in the production of soil fertilizer by accelerating the nutrient cycles in soil systems. The objective of our study is to improve the quality of fertilizer from vermicompost, using cow manure as the main material. From results, our controls and formulas met the criteria under the quality control values for organic manure as outlined by the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and cooperative Thailand (2005). All main minerals, the concentrations of total nitrogen; total phosphorus and total potassium were 2-5 times higher than requested. The presence of toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium and mercury in our controls and formulas were 10 to 40 times less than requested. The trace element, boron however, was not specified; our control and formula contained this element at the detectable level.
