Using Social Networks as an Education Channel for Undergraduate Students: A Case Study in Walailak University
Abstract:
Social network has grown tremendously. Popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter are changing the world
of communication and interaction among human on the Internet. There are many groups of users use social network. The
student is one major group. Most of the students use social network widespread for all educational level since primary to
undergraduate students.
Although social network is very popular, it is seldom adopted for education in Thailand. Most students use social
network for entertainment within a group of students. There are a few recent studies examined the patterns using social
network as a tool for education in order to connect between students and instructors. Thus, in this paper we want to
investigate the feasibility study whether we adopt the social network as a useful tool for education. We would like to study
social network workload and want to see a global picture of the range such as duration to use and frequency of activities
that students conduct when they connect to social network
This paper empirically surveyed 30 students from faculty of informatics, Walailak University. We found that both male
and female students took time to the Internet similarly. Most students took time about 1-3 and 3-5 hours per time everyday.
They used 40% of time in chatting, 25% of time in watching videos and photos, and 10% of time in sending and reading
message as well as making friends and watching profile. Most participants, 81.8%, used the Internet at the dormitories.
An understanding of user interactions in social network provides important information for social behavior as well as
the design of social education applications. From the study we suggest that teacher should design education lesson or
application that is interesting; students can follow it everyday. A good education lesson should be design for discussing.
Students can change or share ideas widespread. Social network will make other students to learn more and feel more part
of the group. It helps students self learning interaction and reflection.
