Synthesis and Characterization of Cobalt and Nickel β-diketonate complexes

Abstract: A series of novel complexes [M(β-dkt)2(NH2-quin)] (M = Ni and Co, β-dkt = dbm, hfac, tmhd, quin = 8-aminoquinoline), were synthesized from the 1:1 reaction of [M(dkt)2(H2O)2] and quin in dichloromethane. The compounds were crystallized by diffusion of hexane into a solution of the complex in CH2Cl2 to afford crystals after two days. FTIR spectroscopy reveals C=O bands at between 1,650-1,590 cm-1 indicative of bound β-diketonate ligands while two broad bands at 3,300 cm-1 are characteristic of the quin ligand. UV–Vis spectroscopy shows very strong bands in the UV region consistent with ligand centred π-π* transitions. In all cases d-d transitions were observed. Interestingly, [Ni(tmhd)2(NH2-quin)] forms a four coordinate species in solution with a single intense transition at 528 nm. The complexes are also found to be redox active oxidzing to M3+. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that [Ni(dbm)2(NH2-quin)], [Ni(hfac)2(NH2-quin)] and [Co(hfac)2(NH2-quin)] crystallize in a triclinic system in the space group P . The structure consists of N–H•••O, C–H•••O and C–H•••π hydrogen bonds, and π•••π stacking interactions. The structures of compounds show that the nickel or cobalt metal centre is octahedral with an O4N2 coordination environment. These interactions play a significant role in increasing the dimensionality and stabilizing the crystal structures.
