Abstract:
This independent study aimed to investigate Long Term Equity Fund (LTF)performance by understanding its history, privileges and conditions as well as to studywhat role LTF played in Thai Stock Market. LTF risk and return were compared to thosein Thai Stock Market. The study assessed LTF performance.
In risk-return comparison and performance assessment, the study was conducted based on Sharpe, Treynor and Jensens model. Parameters included average equity fund return rate, average market return rate, risk-free rate of return, equity fund beta value, standard deviation of equity funds, and standard deviation of the market.
Researchers studied the performance of 20 LTFs that had a policy to invest domestically in SET/SET50 which distributed investment according to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations. Secondary data was also used for this research which was collected daily from June 2007 to December 2009.
After compared equity fund total risk-return rate, LTF showed the same direction of return rate with that of Thai Stock Market while LTF had lower return rate than the stock market. Equity fund risk and stock market risk fluctuated in the same direction with the rate of return. Those equity funds, containing high risk, had high beta value.
The findings showed that there were 5 equity funds that performed better than the market when Thai Stock Market tended to go into a good direction, which were AYF Dividend Stock Long Term Equity Fund (AYFLTFDIV), AYF Dividend Stock Long Term Equity Fund 70/30 (AYFLTFD70), Aberdeen Long Term Equity Fund (ABLTF), The Krung Thai Long-Term Equity Fund70/30 (KTLF70/30), and Asset Plus Long-Term Equity Fund (ASP-LTF). There were 8 equity funds that performed better than the market when Thai stock market tended to go into a bad direction, There included The Krung Thai Long- Term Equity Fund70/30 (KTLF70/30), AYF Equity LTF (AYFLTFEQ), Finansa LongTerm Equity Fund (FAM LTF), 1 A.M. Selective Long Term Equity Fund (1S-LTF), The Krung Thai Long -Term Equity Fund (KTLF), K Equity Dividend LTF (KDLTF), K Equity LTF (KEQLTF), and K Equity 70:30 LTF (K70LTF).
LTF that performed better than the market whether Thai stock market went up or down was The Krung Thai Long-Term Equity Fund70/30 (KTLF70/30) which was very interesting to invest because investors could enjoy higher return than the market and, at the same time, could use tax exemption privilege from investment.
