Abstract:
This research aimed to study 1) the rates of teen dating violence and 2) the factors related to teen dating violence in Nakon Si Thammarat Province. Multi-stage sampling was used to select 516 dating teens as the sample population for this study from secondary schools, vocational schools, and non-formal education settings. Data were collected by using the following questionnaires: demographic questionnaires, Maulsley Personality Inventory questionnaires, and Conflict Tactic Scale questionnaires. Percentage, Mean, Standard deviation, and Chi-square were used to analyze the data.
The results revealed that 52% of the samples were female teens while 48% were male teens. Most of the teens were aged between 16-18 (44%), 60% had married parents, 78% lived with their parents, 88% had introverted personalities, 36% were sexually active with their dating partners, 40% had dated in residences without the presence of their parents or guardians, 52% had dated during 4-8 p.m. and 13% had used alcohol and/or practiced substance abuse during dating. According to the findings, all of the teen samples had experienced at least one form of dating violence wherein all of the teen samples reported psychological dating violence, 77% had experienced physical dating violence, and 48% reported having experienced sexual dating violence.
The study also demonstrated that sex, age, parental marital status, residence with or without parent/s, educational levels, personality types, sexual activity, time and dating place and substance abuse during dating were related to dating violence with statistical significance (p < .05).
The recommendations of the study are that community nurse practitioners should develop a nursing service system for the accessibility of teens at high risk, or teens with dating violence. Furthermore, nursing management should be focused on the teens with premature sexual relationships in order to promote safe sex. In addition, healthcare policy makers should pay attention to these issues, and campaigns should to be developed to raise attention and collaboration among societal stakeholders in order to prevent dating violence.
