Integrating digital games into learning activities to promote Chinese vocabulary learning achievement in primary school students
Abstract:
With the development of educational technology, the use of digital games in foreign language vocabulary instruction has garnered widespread attention. This study employed a quantitative, quasi-experimental design, targeting 52 fourth-grade students from Yumin Pattana School in Thailand. Purposive sampling divided them into an experimental group (30 students) and a control group (22 students). The experimental group received four weeks of digital game-based vocabulary instruction using Wordwall, Kahoot, and Quizlet, while the control group received traditional instruction. The research instruments included vocabulary pre- and post-tests, a learning motivation questionnaire, and classroom observations, supplemented by semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group on vocabulary tests and exhibited higher learning interest, self-efficacy, and classroom engagement. Classroom observations further confirmed that gamification can enhance students' positive emotions and cooperative behavior. The study concluded that digital game-assisted instruction not only improves primary school students' Chinese vocabulary proficiency but also effectively promotes learning motivation and classroom engagement.
