Abstract:
In this paper, a low-phase-noise low-power
voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) based on harmonic
tuning is proposed. A novel resonator brings auxiliary
oscillation at second harmonic, which provides high
impedance to suppress up-conversion of flicker noise to the
carrier. In addition, the resonator has a high Q-factor and
achieves low impulse sensitivity of the oscillator waveforms.
With a supply voltage of 0.34 V, the novel LC-VCO has a
phase noise performance of -110.2 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset
from the oscillator frequency of 20.33 GHz. The minimum
DC power consumption of the VCO IC core is only 0.79 mW,
and the FoM is -197.5 dBc/Hz.
