Abstract: Transformers of the future will be solid state, dry type and designed to meet the requirements of the smart grid. The materials used for producing these transformers will have to meet the criteria of low losses, high thermal endurance etc. This paper reviews the present status of the development of these materials and the emerging trends of technological development of new materials, including active power conversion materials, magnetic materials, conducting materials and insulation materials.
