Semiotic analysis within Taylor Swift s You Belong With Me music video
Abstract:
This study investigates the use of semiotic signs in Taylor Swifts music video You Belong With Me to explore how meaning is constructed through visual elements. The objective is to identify the types of signs present and interpret their significance using Peirces semiotic model, which includes the representamen (the form of the sign), the object (what it refers to), and the interpretant (what it means to the viewer), along with the classification of signs into symbols, indexes, and icons based on their relationship with their object. A qualitative analysis of all 24 scenes in the music video revealed 24 distinct signs: 10 symbolic, 8 iconic, and 6 indexical. Symbolic signs, such as handwritten notes and clothing, appeared most frequently, emphasizing the role of shared cultural symbols in expressing emotion and meaning. The results indicate that Peirces semiotic model is effective for analyzing how music videos communicate feelings and ideas. This study contributes to the understanding of visual storytelling and may be useful for teaching media, culture, or language.
