The Study of applying ChatGPT to assist learning Chinese translation for international students
Abstract:
Chinese became increasingly popular in Thailand due to closer ties with China in trade, tourism, and education. However, translation remained difficult for Thai students because of structural differences between Chinese and Thai and the lack of direct word equivalence. Traditional instruction often overlooks translation training, leaving students struggling. This study examined whether ChatGPT could enhance students Chinese translation skills and their acceptance of using it for learning. Fifty junior high school students in Chiang Mai participated and were assessed through pre-test and post-test, a translation skills test, and a Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire. Results showed that ChatGPT significantly improved translation performance (t = 6.360, p = 0.002). Vocabulary showed the greatest improvement, followed by grammar and accuracy, suggesting that ChatGPT was particularly effective in supporting vocabulary acquisition. TAM results also revealed significant increases across all four dimensions: Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Attitude Toward Using, and Behavioral Intention to Use, with behavioral intention scoring the highest, indicating a strong willingness among students to continue using ChatGPT. These findings confirmed both the effectiveness and acceptance of ChatGPT, encouraging further integration of AI tools in Chinese language education.
