Fluorescent probe based on carbohydrazide-decorated curcumin for detection of aldehyde compounds via Schiff's base reaction
Abstract:
Aliphatic aldehydes are typical sources of organic micropollutants in water supplies because they are widely used in industry. The long-chain aldehydes are also used as lung cancer biomarkers due to their high quantities in lung cancer patients. Interestingly, the development of an effective sensor for detecting aldehyde levels and pre-diagnosis is a challenge. In this study, a novel fluorescence sensor CCDZ based on carbohydrazide-decorated curcumin was designed for sensitive and specific detection of long-chain aldehydes using a fluorometer. This sensor demonstrated fluorescent enhancement at 426 nm upon excitation at 380 nm with a specific long-chain aldehyde in aqueous media of 10% DMSO and 0.01 M phosphate buffer pH 6. This sensing platform can classify aliphatic aldehyde compounds including short (C1C5) and long (C6C9) chain aldehydes in aqueous solution. It is highly selective and sensitive to long-chain aldehydes, particularly C9. The limit of detection (LOD) of CCDZ toward C9 was 26.09 ± 0.81 μM and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 79.06 ± 2.05 μM and linear between 30 μM700 μM. Hence, the present work highlights a new fluorescence chemosensor based on curcumin herbs that offers high sensitivity and selectivity for long-chain aldehyde detection.
