Bus routing problem with time windows for tourists (BRPTWT)
Abstract:
The tourism industry in Thailand has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years, due largely to changes in geopolitics that, in turn, impact most tourism-related businesses, including tourist transportation services between airports and hotels. Efficient transportation planning is essential to accommodate varying tourist demands while ensuring cost-effective and reliable services. One of the key challenges in tourist transportation is optimizing bus routes while considering time windows, ensuring that buses operate efficiently within scheduled arrival and departure times. This study presents a mathematical model to address the Bus Routing Problem with Time Windows for Tourists (BRPTWT), in which tourists from various flights are transported to designated hotels in such a way that the total cost of transportation is minimized. For practicality, the model includes time window constraints at both hotels and the airport, ensuring that tourists are properly served within the operational time window. We find that small BRPTWT instances could be solved to optimality by CPLEX. Yet, large BRPTWT instances may require advanced heuristics, due to its complexity, worth exploring in future research studies.
