Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation in Art and Design, titled "Mae Chaem Ae... Beauty of Pha Sin Teen Jok in Contemporary Art," aims to study the cultural context of Pha Sin Teen Jok weaving, focusing on the history, concepts, distinctive patterns, and unique identity of Mae Chaem textiles, particularly Pha Sin Teen Jok. This study also explores the beliefs and perceptions surrounding the use of woven fabrics in the daily lives of people in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province. Furthermore, the research culminates in the creation of mixed-media art, synthesizing the knowledge gained from the study of Pha Sin Teen Jok weaving culture to inspire artistic creation and reflect the value and beauty of Mae Chaem Pha Sin Teen Jok patterns. This study comprises two main phases: a study of the weaving culture of Mae Chaem Pha Sin Teen Jok and the creation of mixed-media artwork through an in-depth analysis. Part 1: Studying the Mae Chaem Pha Sin Teen Jok Weaving Culture. This phase explores the history, techniques, patterns, and beliefs associated with Pha Sin Teen Jok weaving in the Mae Chaem community, specifically in Tha Pha and Chang Khoeng subdistricts, Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province. Three primary research methods were employed: Field Observation: Observing the daily life and weaving practices within the community. Physical Measurement: Studying and surveying historical and geographical areas. Structured interviews: structured interviews were conducted to gather data from experts and community members. Data collection was divided into two main parts: documentary research, which involved studying relevant documents and research to establish foundational information, and fieldwork, which involved surveying craftspeople, local artists, and significant sites through observation, interviews, and note-taking. Following data collection, content analysis was conducted to synthesize the information, focusing on: social and cultural changes affecting weaving, the value and identity of Pha Sin Teen Jok weaving, and various elements related to Pha Sin Teen Jok and associated beliefs. Part 2: Creating Artworks. The creation of mixed-media installation art was created to reflect the value and beauty of Mae Chaem Pha Sin Teen Jok. The creative process involved: selecting distinctive patterns and identities from Pha Sin Teen Jok, synthesizing information and presenting the beauty of Pha Sin Teen Jok in a cultural dimension, defining conceptual frameworks and theories for the artwork, experimenting with art creation and installation for exhibition, and summarizing the results and writing a creation report. The artwork creation emphasizes presenting the relationship between art and the cultural beliefs of the Mae Chaem community in a contemporary art form. This exhibition explores the connection between local culture and the evolution of contemporary art. Pha Sin Teen Jok is considered a unique symbol of the Lanna people, featuring intricate patterns that reflect the local cultural and artistic identity. Integrating Pha Sin Teen Jok into contemporary art involves blending traditional folk art with diverse new concepts and creative methods, using various materials and techniques to communicate ideas about preserving cultural heritage and reinterpreting it in the modern era. The studys findings highlight the creation of beauty in terms of both art and local identity, demonstrating an ability to adapt meaningfully to contemporary social and cultural contexts and connect with the development of creativity in the contemporary art world.
