Abstract:
This thesis based on qualitative document analysis, presents an in-depth study of metaphorical method in Buddhist scriptures, with a special focus on the Nāgasenabhikṣu Sūtra (Chinese version). The study emphasizes three main objectives namely: (1) to study the metaphor method in Buddhist Scriptures; (2) to study the background and origin of the Nāgasenabhikṣu Sūtra; (3) and to analyze the metaphor method in the Nāgasenabhikṣu Sūtra. The findings reveal the following:
The findings highlight the concept and role of metaphor in Buddhist scriptures in general, and these metaphors not only explore the metaphors in the Mahāyāna and Theravāda doctrines but also present some more core teachings in the Sectarian school, namely, the Sarvāstivāda school to which NBS belongs. Furthermore, the study explores the historical and cultural context of the NBS, including its lineage, language, and school, and the dialogue between Bhikṣu Nāgasena and King Milinda, which reveals their philosophical depth and pedagogical methods. Finally, the study identifies and classifies the structure, meaning, and function of metaphors in NBS according to Buddhist doctrines and thematic groups, revealing that the model in their conversation is not merely a literary tool but an integral component of Buddhist pedagogy. These metaphors serve to simplify complex ideas, facilitate memory, and engage the listener or reader from both a spiritual and educational perspective, and they remain relevant to contemporary readers.
