The Futures of identities in Myanmar: A Participatory futures project
Abstract:
This study explores the complex and evolving landscape of identity in Myanmar through a participatory futures framework using a workshop style data collection method. Rooted in the countrys long-standing ethnic, religious, and political divisions, identity in Myanmar has historically been a source of systemic discrimination, civil conflict, and social fragmentation. The research employs social identity theory, futures triangle methodology, and participatory workshops with diverse Myanmar citizens in Chiang Mai to examine preferred visions and possible trajectories for the futures of identity in the country. Participants identified pushes, pulls and weights of the futures triangle and imagined future scenarios ranging from minimal to radical change and cocreated identity cards reflecting shifts in inclusion, fluidity, and equality. The findings reveal a collective desire for a harmonious, federalist society with inclusive governance, equitable education, gender and religious tolerance, and reformed identification systems. The study recommends non-political interventionssuch as de-Burmanising education, promoting domestic tourism, fostering inclusive arts, and reforming identification systemsas pathways to reduce identity-based discrimination and foster national unity in a pluralistic Myanmar.
