Study of thermoelastic metamaterials simultaneously exhibiting negative thermal expansion and negative Poisson's ratio
Abstract:
Auxetic lattice solids with curved bi-material ligaments are studied via the finite element numerical method. Their overall Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion can be simultaneously tuned to be negative or positive through their microstructural geometry and material parameters. The Young's modulus of ligaments plays an important role in controlling the effective Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The Poisson's ratio of individual ligaments has a mild effect on overall auxeticity, but a strong effect on effective thermal expansion. In addition, effective mechanical properties increase with Young's modulus of ligament joints. Furthermore, when Young's modulus of the joint is fixed, a larger joint size gives rise to stronger auxeticity but less negative thermal expansion. By tuning the coefficient of thermal expansion of each constituent, the overall coefficient of thermal expansion may be negative, zero, or positive. The bi-material auxetic structures may be so designed to possess unconventional properties for real-world applications when their microstructure and the thermoelastic properties of constituents are suitably tuned.
