Abstract:
After the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, a number of women leave home and participate in the social labors, being no longer the women of family but the women of society. More and more organizational management posts are occupied by female, but female managers still encounter particular difficulties in their career life. The study focuses on the female managers in Southwestern China, and based on the phenomenological research methodology. The purpose of this study is to describe the glass ceiling as perceived by women as enterprise managers in Southwestern China. This study also want to understand the characteristics of women in managerial positions as well as their advantages and resources necessary to obtain the managerial positions. In-depth interviews of eight female managers were used to capture the essence of their lived experience in their current managerial positions. The study found that there are three main obstacles they faced:1) the sex stereotype; 2) the physiological and psychological pressure upon women; 3) the unfriendly social environment. And the study revealed that, if women have positive attitudes (eg. confidence), good personalities (eg. hardworking), and appropriate actions (eg. keep learning), they will have a greater chance to break through the glass ceiling. The valuable views and insights provided by the informants in this study is based on their many years of experience. And this experience and advice may help more women cracking the glass ceiling, pursuing higher positions, and then, finding their own value
