Development of innovative biocomposite materials for various applications
Abstract:
This research aimed to develop environmentally friendly biocomposite materials using polylactic acid (PLA) to create novel, high-value products. The potential of biocomposite materials was maximized by incorporating inorganic additives such as barium ferrite (BaFe12O19), nano-silver coated titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2), and europium-doped magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4:Eu), as well as organic additives like nano-silver coated ground tea leaves (Ag/GTL). Advanced applications including magnetic, antimicrobial, photocatalyst, pigment, ion-sensor, luminescence, and oil spill cleanup materials were targeted. Fiber and 3D filament production processes were applied to produce PLA biocomposites with specific properties. The mechanical properties of the PLA composites showed minimal decreases, while the thermal properties remained largely unaffected as the amount of inorganic or organic additives increased. However, it is advised not to exceed one part per hundred of polymer (phr) in additive mixing, as excessive mixing hinders continuous fiber and filament production. These findings hold promise for future eco-friendly textile applications.
