Abstract:
PAHs are common pollutants found in soil, air, and water. Due to their hydrophobic
nature, studies often focus on PAHs in sediments and aerosols, while less is known about
their dissolved forms. This study investigated the dissolved PAHs in the Chao Praya
River basin, which could affect raw water quality for treatment plants. Water samples
were collected from five canals discharging into the river, from upstream to downstream,
during the year 2024. Samples were pretreated and extracted using solid-phase extraction
(SPE), then analyzed with GC-MS/MS. PAH concentrations ranged from 1,648 to
127,206 ng/L, with higher levels in downstream. Bang-Toei canal showed the highest
contamination, followed by Baan-Prao. Two-ring PAHs were most common, making up
to 67% of total PAHs in Chiang-Rak canal (upstream) and 83% in Bang-Toei canal
(downstream). They were likely due to urban runoff. The source control or bio-retention
systems like vegetation buffers could reduce pollution
