Reproductioin, behavior and distribution pattern of soldier crab around Prapas Beach, Ranong province, Thailand

Abstract: The specimens of soldier crabs were collected from Laem Son National Park, at Prapas Beach, in Ranong Province between July 2018 and June 2019. Biology, ecology, distribution, environmental data, and behavior of soldier crabs were observed then the data has been analyzed and used as bio-indicators. The results showed that the specimens of soldier crabs from Laem Son National Park, at Prapas Beach, found all year round in the sandy beach with very fine sand particle size, could be divided into 3 species such as Dotilla intermedia, D. myctiroides and Scopimera globosa. The gonadal developmental stage observed from their internal morphologies, such as size and color of gonads, highlighted 3 stages that could be identified in males and 5 stages in females. Most species observed can reproduce all year round and sex ratio almost 1:1 (male: female) for a majority of months all year round (χ 2 H < χ 2 0.05, nt-1, p>0.05, df = 11). The estimated size, at 50% maturity, for male crabs of each species were 2.05, 2.01 and 2.05 mm while females were 2.03, 2.02 and 2.04 mm, respectively. Fecundity of each species showed that 177.99±98.08, 159.84±106.36 and 208.69±116.60 eggs, respectively when their carapace widths were 2.50–3.30 (2.85±0.25), 2.50–3.30 (2.77±0.08), and 2.50–3.30 (2.80±0.07) mm, respectively. Behaviors were observed and classified into 5 categories such as living, feeding, burrowing, defense and mating behavior. The correlation between soldier crabs and environmental factors were analyzed by coinertia analysis and revealed that D. myctiroides will appear when the value of organic matter was higher than 11.15%, while D. intermedia will appear when the temperature was less than 37.35 °C and S. globosa will appear when temperature was higher than 37.35 °C and organic matter higher than 9.74%.
