Abstract:
Newcastle disease is a major viral disease in poultry that causes of economic losses in poultry industry throughout the world. Generally, back yard native chickens were the highest risk group for Newcastle disease viruss infection because of the lack of biosecurity and vaccination. Interestingly, back yard native chickens are the most common raise within villages in Lao PDR and most of them are raised up without a good biosecurity and suitable vaccination for Newcastle disease. Moreover, the detection of Newcastle disease virus in Lao PDR had not been reported before. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect of Newcastle disease viruses in backyard native chickens in Lao PDR. Three hundred of cloacal swabbed-pooled samples were collected from back yard native chickens in three villages including Dongbang, Somsavanh, and Phailome in Lao PDR. These samples were performed by using egg inoculation, HA test, and RT-PCR for Newcastle disease viral detection. These samples shown the negative results with egg inoculation and HA test. However, the viruses could be detected by RT-PCR- from three villages in differences rates including Dongbang 84%, Somsavanh 100%, and Phailome 100%. Although, this study was the preliminary study but we hope that the results will be used as the epidemiological information for monitoring and promoting the good biosecurity practices in poultry farms and back yard native chickens in Lao PDR.
