Relationship among heat stress, lipid peroxidation and neutrophil phagocytic activity in dairy cows
Abstract:
This study evaluated relationship among hot and humidity environment, lipid peroxidation and neutrophil phagocytic activities in dairy cows. Ambient temperature and relative humidity data were collected from Thai Meteorological Department for THI calculation during the experimental period. Seasons were categorized as hot and cool period by THI levels. This research was conducted in May 2017 to January 2018 at Ban Pong district, Ratchaburi province in four sub-districts, consisting of Nong O (Farm A), Don Krabuang (Farm B), Bang Pong (Farm C) and Nakhon Chum (Farm D). Five dairy cows were selected from each farm. Cows physical conditions data including rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, body condition score and rumen contraction rate were recorded. Serum and milk samples were collected twice a month for lipid peroxidation analysis using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay.
In June and December, blood samples were collected from jugular vein for neutrophil phagocytic activity test. In August, October and December, composite milk samples were collected for milk composition analysis. Result of the physical cows parameters showed that rectal temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate were higher for the hot period than for the cool period. However, rumen contraction rate in the hot period was lower than in the cool period. THI was positively correlated with serum malondialdehyde concentration (r = 0.678), and milk malondialdehyde concentration (r = 0.851). The neutrophil phagocytic activity in hot period was lower than cool period. Milk compositions did not differ between hot and cool periods. It could be concluded that heat stress increased lipid peroxidation and decreased phagocytic activities of neutrophils, which might be related to impair health status of the dairy cows.
