Development of customization framework for engineering-to-ordered of the electrical motor industry
Abstract:
The research aims to propose the decision making framework for mass customization problem by developed the customization indexes to classify products and components of the electrical motors whether them should be made to stock (MTS), assembly to order (ATO) or make to order (MTO) by applied data mining approach comparing between classification and clustering technique. This research employed three variables; that is, demand, lead time and profit margin in establishing classification rule of products and also used variables such as total demand, production lead time ratio and part cost to categorize components. The three decision models had been introduced: Model 1 (Simple model), Model 2 (Supervised model) and Model 3 (Unsupervised model), then the experiments had been conducted to confirm that both classification and clustering technique can yield results according to mass customization categories. From three decision models, we obtained five sets of results. The researcher also proposed results conversion from mass customization categories to be in a variable format that facilitates the decision making; that is, calculation of lead time and inventory cost in case where such calculation is considered of mass customization type. Then extended the results analysis with companys policy to encourage more alternatives. Consequently, we found preferable sets of results.
